近況報告

久し振りのブログ更新。

 

前から興味あって、去年なんとなく応募してみた「青年海外協力隊」に合格してしまいました。

 

一瞬どうするか迷いましたが、対象が 20歳～39歳とそろそろこういうチャンスもぎりぎりになってきたので、折角の機会と思い行ってみようと思います。

会社は、休職扱いにしてくれるとの事ですが、中途半端は嫌なので、退職予定。

 

それ以上の詳細は、これから調べたり聞いたりして行く感じです。

ちょっと予想外でしたが、２０１０年は相当エキサイティングな年になりそうです。

No Stocks Gadget on Windows 7 RTM version

As you may know, there are no “Stocks gadget” on Windows 7 RTM. (there was one for earlier builds).

Just found this on the web as a reason why it was removed.

“Dow jones, who is the provider of the “Dow Jones Industrial Average” quote feed to the Win 7 in-box stock gadget, wants a EULA agreement to be shown and accepted for any user before they can see the data from their feed in the stock gadget.

While investigating further …, we came to know that the total number of DJ indices that we would have to block is close to 3100, and not 1 as we had thought earlier. This has an impact on the design. Specifically, the solution that we were considering earlier of using the configuration file (config.xml) becomes risky, and may not suffice. ”

Thus the following was implemented:
“- remove stocks gadget on fresh install on Win 7
  – remove stocks gadget when upgrading to Win 7 from Vista
  * remove stocks gadget code from %program files%/windows sidebar/gadgets
  * remove gadget from settings.ini, so that if it was present on the desktop befor upgrade then it must not show up
  * stock gadget must not show up on the gadget gallery after upgrade
  – remove MSN money query framework in WLSrvc.dll, so that any gadget was using this earlier (in vista, or earlier Win 7 builds) is not able to use the same after this change.”

Don’t know if this is true story or not, but if this is for real, it’s lame…

but then, I just remember, when I was PM for Internet Explorer and got sued for ActiveX control, that we had to put up dialog to run any embedded objects such as ActiveX control, I almost wanted to remove the entire feature as well…

I don’t know who is lame, whether Dow Jones or Microsoft, or whoever, but as a end-user, I was not so happy with the removal of that gadget.  I tried few other stock gadgets, but so far, I haven’t found the one that I liked yet.

とか、Browser (Netscale や Internet Explorer) のポテンシャルに惚れこんで、IE の PM をやっていた人間としては、思わず言いたくなってしまいますね。 まだ、アメリカにいったら、そういうステッカーでも作ってたかもな。
（そういや、昔 "Windows is so great, even DOJ wants to sue us" みたいなステッカー作って、自粛させられた奴いたな.。それでも車のリアバンパーに貼っていたが）

とりあえず、何故 Google がこれを提供する必要があったのか？ というのをこれからじっくり見させて欲しいと思う。楽しみに期待してます。

p.s. 最後に、インストール先が、C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application ってどうよ？と思った。

IT業界の平均年収＠ワシントン州

Seattle Post-Intelligencer は、ワシントン州の2007年の賃金上昇率がインフレ率を上回ったと報じた。

「ワ州雇用保障局が6日に発表した内容によると、ワ州の賃金は2006年と比較して5%上昇し、インフレ率3.9%を上回った。2007年の平均年給は 45,000ドル（週給866ドル）で、2006の42,900ドルを上回った。最も年給が低いのはホテル・食品サービス業界の16,017ドル。また、農業・林業・漁業部門の平均は23,412ドルだった。一方、最も年給が高かったのは情報サービス部門で、平均96,241ドル。この部門には出版・放送・インターネット・通信が含まれている。これと並んで高かいのは企業管理部門の86,943ドルと公益事業部門の73,740ドルとなっている。郡別に見ると、最も高いのはキング郡の56,217ドルで、これにスノホミッシュ郡の45,448ドル、ベントン郡の43,786ドルが続いている。逆に年給が最も低いグループには、オカノガン、ダグラス、パシフィック、アソティン、アダムス、ワキアクム、サンファン、リンカーン、スカマニア、ジェファソン郡が含まれる。なお、この数値は平均週給に基づいており、フルタイムのみを対象としたものではない。従って、ホテル・食品サービス部門などの平均年給が低いのは、パートタイム職員の割合が高いことが大きな理由となっている。」

そうなんですよ。IT業界 は、アメリカじゃ良い分野なのに、何故か日本ではIT業界は条件が悪いといわれる。
日本に来てから２年半になるけれども、今だにその原因が良くわからない。  Why?

モノポリー キャッシュカードエディション

Monopoly のキャッシュカード版が出たらしい。
今でも、週末など友達集めてやったりしているので、欲しいかも…  どうせなら、Edy/Suica/Passmo あたりを使えると、かなり大人なゲームになるんだけどなｗ
もしくは、ゲーム終了時に次回にお金を持ち越せるとか…

ただ、キャッシュカードなので管理すると、レベニューシェアみたいな事をやったり、ディールの時にフレキシブルな（複雑な）付帯条件を付けにくくなるので、最終的には現金に戻りそうなきはする。

購入する前に、ここで遊んでみるか。

マイクロソフト研究員、今度は球面ディスプレイ「Sphere」萌え

MSR (Microsoft Research) は、MSFT の 20% ルールみたいなもの。各エンジニアの 20% ではなくて、R&D 全体の 20% 位のリソースが MSR につぎ込まれる。（場所は、レドモンド、シリコンバレー、UK、中国 にある）

ただ、ひたすら面白そうなものを作りたければ、Good place to work for だと思う。
なにも出荷できないのが、欠点だが…
（出荷するには、年に１，２回 Redmond キャンパスで行われる Microsoft Research Festival などを通して、製品チームに売り込まないといけない。そこでうまくけば、製品チームが引き継いでもらえるか、時には出荷まで開発を手伝うこともある。）
